Do you find yourself feeling increasingly isolated despite being surrounded by people? How many opportunities for connection do you miss each day? What if the antidote to our social disconnection was as simple as pausing to notice the humanity in the stranger beside you?
"Every day, I set myself the challenge of having a quick conversation of possibility with a stranger, " explained Mo McKenna, founder of Return on Energy, when we interviewed her for this podcast. "When you pause and create these connections, it improves your mental wellbeing, and it increases their wellbeing too. It taps into our relational energy field."
In our increasingly polarized world, these brief, intentional moments of connection – what Mo calls "conversations of possibility" – can transform ordinary interactions into extraordinary mini-huddles. They aren't lengthy discussions or perfect exchanges, but rather micro-moments where we choose to see and acknowledge another person.
At the heart of these mini-huddles is a simple framework Mo calls PCC:
Pause: Take a breath. Ground yourself. Notice what's happening around you.
Curious: Approach the person with genuine wonder rather than judgment.
Choose: Offer a small gesture or question that invites connection.
"Every time we choose to use pause, get curious, choose to connect with somebody, we're blown away by how such a small moment can have such a positive ripple through our day," Mo shares.
For many of us, the hardest part of creating these mini-huddles is actually speaking up. We've gotten curious, but that moment of opening our mouths can feel intimidating. To help us get started Mo offered four suggestions:
Notice and Acknowledge: "I love your scarf," or "Thank you for that smile – that was just so energizing."
Appreciation: "Thank you for helping me get through what was a pretty stressful situation," or "Thanks for your patience."
Simple Invitations: "What's happened that was good today?" or "What's been the highlight of your week?"
Curiosity: "I'm curious, what attracted you to this profession?" or "If you could recommend one hidden gem in this city, what would it be?"
These don't need to be perfect interactions – just simple invitations to brief moments of connection. Of course, not every attempt at connection lands as hoped. For those awkward moments, Mo offers a helpful TIP:
T – This is not about you: People have their own stressors, their own triggers. We never know what it is.
I – Isn't that interesting?: When someone's reaction surprises you, get curious rather than defensive.
P – Plan tight and hang loose: Have an intention, but release your attachment to the outcome.
These micro-practices aren't just about brightening someone else's day – they transform how we all experience the world. They build our capacity for deeper connections and bridge-building across our differences.

Please note: We are mindful that 'girl' and 'woman' are socially constructed ideas of gender that can fall painfully short of defining the fabulous complexity of who we each are. If these words resonate with part of how you have previously or currently identified yourself, we'd love to hear about your lived experiences.
