Do you ever wonder how people break free of their ‘good girl’ beliefs? And, what really shapes how we learn to be our unique selves? Is it the advice we receive, the books we read, or the classes we attend?
When the women we researched were asked this question, they pointed to one factor: role models.
Most of their role models weren’t explicitly teaching them how to break free - they weren’t giving a lecture, running a course, or saying “here’s how to live differently.” Instead, they led by example.
A teacher who lived unapologetically.
An aunt who didn’t follow the expected path.
A famous figure who embodied freedom.
As young girls and women, they had noticed these cues, but they were rarely spoken aloud. And it leads us to wonder:
What if more of us intentionally role modelled how to break free of our ‘good girl’ beliefs? What difference might that make in the life of the young girls we know?
